NEW EXHIBIT at the St. Johns County Administration Building, 500 San Sebastian View
St. Augustine, Florida
March 6 - May 24
8am - 5pm
(Monday - Friday)
Opening Reception - March 6 - 8:15-9am
Hastings - In April, 2011 a vision was brought to life in Hastings - to bring regional artists together with legendary Florida artist, A.E. (Beanie) Backus. The only criteria was that the artist should have a love - and body of work representing a particular region - from Elkton to East Palatka - The Potato Capital of Florida.
In 1927 Beanie spent some time in Hastings at the Stanton Building creating five outstanding wall murals in a doctor/dentist's office off Main Street. We turned those offices into The Backus Gallery for two shows in May & August, 2011. Now these artists have invited Beanie to exhibit with them at the County Administration Building. Prints of the five murals will be on display along with the beautiful work of Joe Taylor, Charles Dickinson and Eddie White.
Don't miss the opportunity to see the work of Taylor, Dickinson & White - all of whom are well known Regional Artists - the breathtaking vistas of the fields, cows, farms, skies, storms, old barns - the art is stunning.

For its March 9th and 11th Winter Concert performances, the St. Augustine Community Orchestra will present a unique program of selected classical music used in recent hit movies. For example, Conductor William McNeiland has chosen Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 (1901), used in 13 films including “Forrest Gump”, winner of 6 Oscars in 1994.; “High School Musical”, a 2006 Disney Channel telefilm; and “A Clockwork Orange”, (1971) Director Stanley Kubrick’s futuristic tale of decaying cities. Other examples include Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld” (1858), a humorous French musical take-off on the Greek tragedy, used in 14 films including “Titanic” (Academy Award winner of 1997) and “Moulin Rouge”.(2001). Music by well-known composers of earlier times has often been used in modern day films to convey to the audience, through music, the emotional and sensory effects that the original composer wrote into it.

Have you ever wondered how a child views the town they live in? As adults, we often take our surrounding for granted and don’t take much notice of what is going on around us. A new exhibit in the St. Johns County Rotunda Gallery will present a unique look of Lincolnville as seen by its younger residents.

Students at Crookshank Elementary School enjoyed a truly artistic day on March 26. Instead of following their regular schedule, they assembled by grade level for a variety of art and musical projects and performances. Art teacher Yvonne Delamar, along with Media Resource teacher Mary Linehan, principal Jay Willetts, and assistant principal, Bethany Groves, designed the celebration of the arts to encourage artistic expression and to keep students excited about the learning environment.
