THE “BATTLE OF BLOODY MOSE” COMMEMORATION
Thursday, May 16, 2013
In the early morning hours of June 26, 1740, the village of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose (mo-SAY), the first, legally sanctioned free black settlement in the continental U.S., became the site of the bloodiest battle in Florida’s part in the War of Jenkins’ Ear. That day saw Florida’s Spanish soldiers, black militia, and native Yamassee auxiliaries locked in a “clash of empires” with invading English and Scottish troops from Georgia, a battle that culminated in desperate, hand-to-hand fighting as Fort Mose, St. Augustine’s northern-most defense, burned around them. The decisive Spanish victory at “Bloody Mose” was one of the factors that ended British Georgia’s invasion of Spanish Florida. On Saturday, June 22, 2013, Florida Living History, Inc. (FLH – http://floridalivinghistory.org/ ), along with Fort Mose Historic State Park ( www.floridastateparks.org/fortmose/ ) and the Fort Mose Historical Society ( www.fortmose.org/ ), will host the fourth, annual Battle of Bloody Mose Commemoration. The Battle of Bloody Mose historical re-enactment will take place from 10AM to 3PM at Fort Mose Historic State Park – 15 Fort Mose Trail; St. Augustine, Florida; 32084.

Gypsy Cab/Cultural Council Team-up for a Fun-Raiser!
Tuesday, May 14, 2013
“Dinner and a Movie” anyone? Pat Morrissey of Gypsy Cab is, once again, lending his award-winning restaurant as the venue for a fundraiser for the St. Johns Cultural Council. The mission of the Council is to promote St. Johns County as a premiere arts destination where the lives of both residents and visitors are enhanced through arts and culture. The first film to be shown in this new series will be by one of America’s most renowned independent film makers, John Sayles. “Honeydripper” is the movie. Filmed in 2007 in rural Alabama and set in 1950, it’s a time of transition in the South and a time of transition in music. It can be said this is a historical drama of the time when the blues gave birth to rock and roll. It isn’t known how Sayles discovered young Austin guitar player Gary Clark, Jr. in 2007 to play the musician who wanders into town at a fateful time and ends up sitting in for a famous musician booked to save Danny Glover’s ailing club from bankruptcy. In 2013 Gary Clark, Jr. put out a blockbuster album called ‘Blak & Blu’. His licks are superb. Other musicians peppered throughout the film are Dr. Mable John, Eddie Shaw and Keb’ Mo’. Other cast members of note, in addition to Danny Glover, are Mary Steenburgen, Stacy Keach, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Tom Wright and Lisa Gay Hamilton. Even Sayles himself makes a cameo appearance.
